As a UCKP qualified Psychotherapist of 30 years standing, I am a huge advocate for expert led animation in the treatment of mental health issues. When a client is in a time of stress, for example, through trauma or a hangover or depression, they are least likely to be able to take in information through print. As we all know, seeing a clinician for support takes on average 6 months plus, leaving the person without support when they most need it. In my clinical practice, I have used animation to great affect, for example in the treatment of trauma where a person is literally lost for words. I have seen clients experience immediate relief through watching an animation and understanding the ideas expressed within them. The animation provides a roadmap for a person to recover from overwhelm and to find a route back to “normal” life. Animation also provides a narrative for those people who aren’t healthcare professionals to work with their child (for examples) and the clinician to support and care for those in distress.
Over the past few years, AI tools have started creeping into animation studios across the UK. Most teams are not replacing traditional workflows, but adding tools like Runway to speed up parts of production that used to take much longer. Studios in London and other creative hubs are already using this approach to produce motion graphics, marketing visuals and 3D assets more quickly.
AI animation is beginning to appear more often in healthcare communication and patient education. Hospitals, charities and health organisations use animated visuals to explain medical processes that can be difficult to describe in text or conversation. New AI tools are making this kind of animation faster and cheaper to produce, and they can also support interactive resources such as virtual assistants or simple 3D patient models.
When people search online for health information, they are rarely acting like researchers. More often, they are tired, anxious, short on time, or unsure whether something is serious enough to act on. Increasingly, what they encounter first is a confident answer generated by artificial intelligence, presented as a neat summary at the top of the page.
For many users, that is where the search ends.
Recent reporting on Google AI Overviews has highlighted the risks of this shift. These AI-generated summaries now sit above traditional search results and present themselves as authoritative explanations. In multiple documented cases, they have been inaccurate, misleading, or missing crucial clinical context. When the subject is health, this is not a minor technical flaw. It is a patient safety issue.
Why AI health summaries struggle with patient understanding
AI health summaries do not fail because they are careless. They fail because of what they are structurally unable to do.
They cannot take responsibility for outcomes.
They cannot reliably distinguish between strong evidence and weaker claims.
They cannot adapt information to personal context or emotional state.
AI Overviews collapse multiple sources into a single answer and elevate it as the most relevant response. That answer often sounds medical and looks authoritative. However, investigations have shown that these summaries sometimes draw from sources such as YouTube or low-quality blogs, platforms never designed to meet healthcare publishing standards.
More importantly, uncertainty disappears. Nuance is stripped away in favour of fluency. Once a confident answer appears, users are far less likely to question it, compare sources, or ask whether it applies to them personally. In healthcare, that sense of finality carries real risk.
Authority without accountability in digital health content
Health information has always required interpretation. Traditionally, that interpretation came from clinicians, educators, or trusted healthcare organisations. AI summaries introduce a new form of authority that feels official but has no identifiable expert, no accountable author, and no clear boundary around what it can or cannot advise.
This changes behaviour. Instead of weighing information, users are encouraged to accept it. In non-medical contexts this may be inconvenient. In healthcare, it can delay help-seeking, reinforce false reassurance, or increase anxiety when nuance is missing.
Why patient education is not the same as giving answers
Patient education is often misunderstood as information delivery. In reality, it serves a different and more complex function.
Effective patient education supports understanding rather than closure. It explains why something happens, how systems interact, and when professional input matters. Crucially, it leaves space for uncertainty and informed decision-making rather than presenting a single, definitive answer.

Behaviour follows understanding, not information alone. Health communication shapes how people interpret bodily signals, symptoms, and risk. When explanations are shallow or overly confident, decisions follow flawed logic.

For straightforward factual queries, AI summaries may be adequate. Problems arise when the same approach is applied to diagnosis, prognosis, or behavioural decision-making.
Health is not a general knowledge domain. It is contextual, embodied, and shaped by fear, hope, and interpretation. Systems designed to optimise speed and confidence are poorly suited to that terrain.
Expert-led patient education video does not compete with clinical care. Instead, it supports it. It prepares people to ask better questions, recognise warning signs, and engage more effectively with healthcare professionals.
Why this matters now more than ever
Many adults, particularly women between 35 and 50, are balancing work, family, ageing parents, and their own physical and psychological transitions. Time is scarce and cognitive load is high. When a confident AI summary dismisses a symptom too quickly, it can discourage timely help-seeking.
Patient education must do the opposite. It must slow the right moments down. It must provide context rather than premature reassurance.
A safer future for AI animation in healthcare
The growing scrutiny of AI health summaries is not an argument against AI. It is an argument against unexamined authority.
AI animation and AI video production can reduce costs, increase reach, and improve access to patient education. However, this only works when they are guided by human expertise, clear governance, and ethical responsibility.
